At Dead Curious CIC, we believe in equipping young people with the understanding and tools to navigate conversations around death, dying, loss, and grief. Our youth projects create safe and creative spaces for exploration and discussion.
Why talk about death?
We understand that discussing death, dying, loss, and grief can seem daunting. However, at Dead Curious CIC, we are committed to ensuring young people are not scared but have an age-appropriate understanding of these vital life experiences. We want to empower them to ask questions that might feel difficult for families to address during times of grief. Our approach aligns with the new school curriculum for September 2026, which will integrate death, dying, and loss into PSHE, sciences, and other subjects. We aim to prepare young people to navigate these challenging subjects confidently, whether in their own lives or those of their friends.
Creative conversations for difficult topics
Our youth projects harness the power of creativity to facilitate open and honest conversations. By engaging in creative activities like podcasting, young people find freedom in how they approach these sensitive subjects. Podcasting groups, for example, offer multiple roles, meaning participants don't always need to be front-facing. This encourages participation in the creation and production processes, fostering their involvement in the conversation and enabling them to express their points of view. When young people are given the freedom to express themselves, they can relate the topics to their stage of life and personal experiences. This fosters truly honest, authentic conversations and encourages creativity, building resilience and understanding.
Our inspiring youth projects
We have developed two particularly exciting youth projects:
School mini pods in junior schools
These workshops are uniquely designed to allow children to take active roles in age-appropriate discussions about death. Each session includes a free Q&A segment, facilitating conversations in a comfortable and safe environment. To protect the children's identity, these sessions are typically not video-recorded. However, we do record and edit audio versions, providing them to the school so the children can hear their own podcast episode.
High school podcast project
This project offers high school students greater autonomy to develop and record their own podcast episodes. Guided by a teaching manual, they write, star in, and produce the episodes from scratch. The workshop consists of two parts: an initial session to explain the concept and begin brainstorming ideas, followed by a full day of filming with comprehensive video and audio production. The school then receives a set of episodes to integrate into their educational curriculum, providing a powerful resource for learning and discussion.
